There's always something. In this instance it was a musical which was receiving its premiere and required arrangements for the pit orchestra, a task which I offered to take on. Except that it turned out that (a) the songs weren't finished being written, (b) rather than getting lead sheets with chord progressions, I got a tape and (c) I was also expected to direct the pit orchestra. End result, several months solid of work, which, except for vocal transcriptions ended up not being used. Worse still, this sucked away all of my time for practice so that I suddenly discovered my flute playing had dropped in quality quite palpably. Yuck.
